Well, since the fourth is tomorrow I decided to reflect more on patriotism.
Commonly patriotism is defined as love and devotion to country. Where I find this true, it really requires further definition and will always be up to individual interpretation. Our country was founded on great ideals. I believe embracing the ideals of our predecessors is key, but we also must realize that there is much unfinished work ahead of us (as Lincoln said) to build an even stronger country today. In The True Patriot, the authors say we need to "appreciate not only what is great about our country, but also what it takes to create and sustain greatness." My belief is that we have all the tools to make our country the greatest, we just can't get lazy now.
This has nothing to do with political parties because it is key to every citizen regardless of party affiliation (or non-affiliation!) A gratitude for how lucky we are, an appreciation we should have for the opportunities we have all been given, is a huge part of patriotism. If you find faults with our nation, then change it. You couldn't say that in a lot of places, but here you can make a difference. McCain said "Patriotism is another way of saying service to a cause greater then self-interest." Where I believe some politicians have lost this, I know not all have, and the most important part - you could be a politician, all you need to do is look at our historic Presidential race.
I just hope that we all will not take our freedom for granted. Kennedy warned us, "if we pause for the passing moment, if we rest on our achievements, if we resist the pace of progress...those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future." I believe that our future can be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all... if we stand up and own it. Take pride in your nation. Hang a flag, read about politics, get involved in your community, state or country.. Just remember we can honor the past and still surpass it, making our nation great for all citizens. As Obama said, "the true genius of America - a faith in simple dreams, an insistence on small miracles."
OK, that's it!

Autumn! I LOVE America too! Go red, white and blue...and I am addicted to the whole political process. It is an exciting year! Thanks for the great post!
Hi Autumn! I'm so excited for the link to your cute blog! I'm addicted to reading them but totally opposed to starting one for myself. :) I mean, like I have time for that?!
Love the photos of your beautiful girls!
Well stated Autumn. I think that far too few folks rely on an emotional attachment to candidates and issues when an educated choice that is our right and responsibility is always the most important path.
Autumn,
Nice comments on America. I really enjoy reading about early American history. We were lucky and blessed to have, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, Adams, Monroe etc. We were a tiny nation of just a few million people then but produced such character and genious.
I believe there was a reason and a Force behind it all.
